Reading ext2 Linux partitions on Windows 7 systems

Ever had that annoying need to have a look at your ext2 partitions while working through your Win7 partition (you know, on that multiboot multi HDD system of yours)? Well I do - especially when I need to move partitions around through Partition Wizard.

So, a little googling will get you to Ext2Explore, freeware program - nothing fancy, just what you need to access your partitions.

Όπως και σε τόσες άλλες πτυχές της ζωής έτσι και εδώ η τρομοκρατία ήρθε ως αφορμή/δικαιολογία για την καταπάτηση των προσωπικών ελευθεριών.

Ο λόγος για τους νέους σαρωτές σώματος - full body scanners - το νέο μέτρο ασφάλειας κατά της τρομοκρατίας που άρχισε να εφαρμόζεται στα διεθνή αεροδρόμια της Μεγάλης

Βρετανίας.

Ήδη εδώ και κάποια χρόνια πραγματοποιούσαν δοκιμές στο αεροδρόμιο Heathrow του Λονδίνου (μερικές φορές χωρίς να ενημερώνουν τους επιβάτες - έχω μια συνάδελφο πανεπιστημιακό που μου έλεγε πως πέρασε από κάτι ελέγχους που δεν ήξερε & δεν της είπαν τι είναι και όταν αποκαλύφθηκε η χρήση τους κατάλαβε ότι την "σκανάρανε") όμως τώρα η χρήση τους επιβάλλεται στο Λονδίνο και στο Μάντσεστερ ΔΙΑ ΝΟΜΟΥ!

Όπως αναφέρεται και στα ακόλουθα δύο δημοσιεύματα, από τον

Φεβρουάριο του 2011 τέθηκε σε λειτουργία νόμος που υποχρεώνει τους επιβάτες σε αποδοχή του ελέγχο - άρνηση του ταξιδιώτη να υποβληθεί σε τέτοιον έλεγχο έχει ως συνέπεια την άρνηση επιβίβασης στην πτήση του:

Οι νέοι σαρωτές σώματος λειτουργούν με μια χαμηλής έντασης ραδιενεργό ακτινοβολία (βγάζουν μια ακτινογραφία δηλαδή) η οποία διαπερνά τα ρούχα και απεικονίζει επί της ουσίας το σώμα του εξεταζόμενου γυμνό...

Ο εξεταζόμενος κάθετε μπροστά από τους σαρωτές και σε ένα άλλο δωμάτιο υπάρχουν οι χειριστές που εξετάζουν τις εικόνες.

Όμως, ήδη υπήρξαν κρούσματα κακής χρήσης των εικόνων αυτών από χειριστές του συστήματος στο Λονδίνο.

Όπως περιγράφει το BBC, σε ένα περιστατικό η αστυνομία εξέτασε τη συμπεριφορά ενός 25χρονου χειριστή στις 10 Μαρτίου του 2010 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8584484.stm). Σε άλλη περίπτωση εκτύπωσαν φωτογραφίες κινηματογραφικού σταρ από αυτή τη σάρωση (http://www.prisonplanet.com/exposed-naked-body-scanner-images-of-film-star-printed-circulated.html).

Και η ιστορία δεν σταματάει εδώ - στις ΗΠΑ αποκαλύφθηκε ότι η αρμόδια υπηρεσία Unites States Marshal Service αποθηκεύει και κρατάει σε αρχείο τις εικόνες από χιλιάδες ταξιδιώτες που έχουν σαρωθεί! Μένουν στο αρχείο δηλαδή, και το παραδέχτηκε και η ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση: http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-20012583-281.html

Φυσικά έγινε σάλος όταν αποκαλύφθηκε αυτή η συμπεριφορά, και κατατέθηκε αγωγή κατά του κράτους και της συγκεκριμένης υπηρεσίας (http://www.technewsdaily.com/lawsuit-filed-over-airport-scanner-privacy-health-concerns-0993/ & http://uniorb.com/RCHECK/tsa.htm).

Όμως καταρχάς πρέπει να αναρωτηθούμε εάν αποδίδουν αυτά τα μέτρα.

Αν και δεν προβάλλεται από τα ΜΜΕ, υπάρχει αντίλογος για την τεχνολογία αυτή καθώς μπορεί ο "τρομοκράτης" να ξεγελάσει τον σαρωτή. Αρμόδιοι μέσα από αυτή την "βιομηχανία" λένε πως μπορείς να περάσεις μεταλλικά αντικείμενα και υλικά που δεν περνάνε από τον παραδοσιακό ανιχνευτή μετάλλων. Για ποιά ασφάλεια μιλάνε δηλαδή;

Όμως πέραν του ζητήματος ασφάλειας τίθεται και ένα ζήτημα υγείας - όπως αναφέραμε πιο πάνω, είναι μια μορφή ακτινογραφίας

Η αμερικάνικη εταιρία ασφάλειας TSA ισχυρίζεται ότι η χρήση των Full Body Scanners είναι απολύτως ασφαλής, και ότι η μέση δόση ακτινοβολίας που λαμβάνει ο εξεταζόμενος είναι 15 uSV. Όμως όσοι εναντιώνονται σε αυτή τη συσκευή λένε ότι η TSA μαγειρεύει τα αποτελέσματα καθώς τα 15 uSV είναι ο μέσος όρος ακτινοβολίας για όλο το σώμα ενώ ουσιαστικά την ακτινοβολία την απορροφά κυρίως το δέρμα - και πιστεύεται ότι το δέρμα και το κρανίο του εξεταζόμενου δέχεται 20 φορές περισσότερη δόση. Η δόση εξακολουθεί να είναι μικρή αλλά α. είναι πολύ περισσότερη από ότι ισχυρίζεται η TSA και β.οι επιπτώσεις της ακτινοβολίας στον ανθρώπινο οργανισμό λειτουργούν αθροιστικά... Και φυσικά πάντα υπάρχει ο κίνδυνος κάπου σφάλματος στο μηχάνημα που μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε αυξημένη ακτινοβολία. Οι υποστηρικτές του "υγιούς" αυτής της εξέτασης λένε ότι η πιθανότητα να πάθεις καρκίνο από αυτή την εξέταση (μόνο από αυτήν και όχι αθροιστικά με άλλες ακτινογραφίες κλπ) είναι μια στα 30 εκατομμύρια... μικρή; Όχι αν αναλογιστεί κανείς ότι το 2007 ταξίδευσαν με αεροπλάνα περίπου 2,75 δισεκατομμύρια επιβάτες (http://www.iata.org/pressroom/pr/pages/2007-24-10-01.aspx) ενώ στις ΗΠΑ για το έτος 2008 μονάχα ταξίδευσαν περίπου 800 εκατομμύρια (http://www.numberof.net/number-of-airline-passengers-per-year/). Άρα αυτή η τεχνολογία θα προξενεί καρκίνο σε 91 ανθρώπους ετησίως στην καλύτερη περίπτωση - και αυτό είναι το αποδεκτό/ διαφημιζόμενο από την βιομηχανία νούμερο. Έτσι έχουν τα πράγματα και μέχρι το τέλος του μήνα θα υπάρχουν τέτοιοι σαρωτές και στο αεροδρόμιο του Birmingham & μέσα στο έτος θα υπάρχουν σε όλα τα αεροδρόμια της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας. Και όποιος προτιμά να κρατά την αξιοπρέπειά του και να μην "σαρώνεται" δεν θα μπορεί να πετάξει με την πτήση του. Αντίστοιχα ασκούνται πιέσεις στον Καναδά να υιοθετήσει αυτές τις συσκευές (http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2010/09/11/15318646.html) ενώ ήδη λειτουργούνται σε πολλά αμερικάνικα αεροδρόμια.

Αλλά φυσικά, η τεχνολογία αυτή αλλά και το θράσος της εκάστοτε κυβέρνησης που δια νόμου την εφαρμόζει χωρίς να σέβεται τους πολίτες δεν σταματά στην "ασφάλεια" των αεροδρομίων: ήδη δοκιμάζουν αυτή τη τεχνολογία σε φορητές μονάδες που σαρώνουν αυτοκίνητα και σπίτια και ανθρώπους που περπατάνε στον δρόμο, αλλά ακόμα και συσκευές που ανιχνεύουν την κίνηση των ματιών, δηλαδή το που κοιτάμε! Και δεν νομίζω να πιστεύετε ότι δεν θα χρησιμοποιηθεί αυτή η τεχνολογία για το καλό μας!

Οπότε που βρισκόμαστε;

Υπάρχει τεχνολογία που παραβιάζει την αξιοπρέπειά μας, μας βλέπει γυμνούς και ετοιμάζεται η αντίστοιχη που θα βλέπει μέσα από σπίτια, αυτοκίνητα κλπ.
Αυτή η τεχνολογία εφαρμόζεται δια νόμου γύρω μας.
Όποιος δεν συμμορφώνεται έχει επιπτώσεις (στα αεροδρόμια δεν επιβιβάζεται στην πτήση - ευτυχώς που δεν πάει και φυλακή δηλαδή!).
Όλα αυτά γίνονται για την ασφάλειά μας!

Δηλαδή, το κλασσικό δίλημμα των δικτατορικών καθεστώτων του 21ου αιώνα: πούλα την αξιοπρέπειά σου και τα προσωπικά σου δεδομένα για να αγοράσεις την (εικονική) ασφάλεια που σου πουλάμε.

There's a lot of talk about RFID chips - Radio Frequency ID - chips that can be read from a distance (without contact). Such chips are found in ePassports, products, smartcards & ID cards... but the ultimate goal, even "common sence" wants these chips implanted in human bodies.

In this post we will discuss how, where & since when RFID chips are being implanted in human bodies today.

An american company called Verichip Corp. produces the most popular humanRFID , the only one that has been approved from the FDA. The company merged on the 10/11/2009 with Steel Vault Corporation creating the company called " Positive ID " (http://www.positiveidcorp.com/).

The size of the chip is very small - smaller than a grain of tice, and its impant procedure is very easy a fast, carried out with a hypodermic needle.

Last trend in technology? No. The Verichip is available for purchase for years (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/verichip-goes-consumer-with-its-implantable-rfid-chips-would-you-buy/8567)...

As mentioned in this article, the initial marketing strategy for the Verichip involved health applications -e.g. the chip is conected with a database with all the bearer's health records, illnesses, tests etc, so that in case of emergency the first responders can just scan the patient & have all his medical history available.

So, it is implanted fast with ease. Here are two videos of the whole implant procedure:

It is true, someone can volluntarily go to the doctor and get such an implant. In the Nederlands they already have a commercial use for this. In a 2004 (!) article Andrew Losowsky reports to the Guardian a place called Baja Beach Club in Rotterdam, which offers the RFID services. A customer can link his RFID implant with a bank account, and then he becomes part of the elit clientel which can enjoy the services of the club without carrying money or ID, just by being scanned (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2004/jun/10/onlinesupplement1). That's back in 2004...

Apart from entertainment though, and the ease of bank transactions, as already mentioned the verichip has a health application angle as well. And if you choose not to follow that route then maybe a pandemic crisis will convince you!

So there are two ways that will lead us to the implant: 1. Identification (& bank transactions) and 2. Health issues (either our own or of those around us)...

But the Verichip is not the state-of-the-art chip implant after all. There is another implantable chip - the "powder" type one - that has ALREADY been developed and used by Hitachi.

The powder chip has miniscule dimensions 0.05mm x 0.05mm x 0.005mm. In other words it is invisible to the naked eye. No wonder several scientists refer to it as a "marking".

By the way, the above picture from the Scientific Amrican article, represents the chips' dimensions magnifyed by a power of x10.

So what is the conclusion?

The technology of RFID microchips implantable to human beings is here today, it is already being used and it is not a Sci-Fi scenario of the future.

Πολύς λόγος γίνεται στις μέρες μας για τα RFID τσιπ - Radio Frequency ID - τα οποία μπορούν να διαβαστούν από απόσταση. Τέτοια τσιπ βρίσκονται μέσα στα διαβατήρια, σε προϊόντα, θα μπούνε στις ταυτότητες κάρτες του πολίτη φοροκάρτες... όμως ο απώτερος σκοπός, ακόμα και η "κοινή λογική" θέλει αυτά τα τσιπ να εμφυτεύονται στα ανθρώπινα σώματα.

Σε αυτή την ανάρτηση θα συζητήσουμε το πως, που και από πότε εφαρμόζονται εμφυτεύματα τσιπ στο ανθρώπινο σώμα σήμερα.

Η αμερικάνικη εταιρία Verichip Corp. παράγει το πλεον διαδεδομένο ανθρώπινο εμφύτευεμα RFID, το μοναδικό εγγεκριμένο από τον αμερικάνικο οργανισμό τροφήμων και φαρμάκων (FDA). Όπως αναφέρεται στο άρθρο αυτό, το αρχικό μάρκετινγκ του Verichip αφορά τις εφαρμογές υγείας - π.χ. να είναι συνδεδεμένο το τσιπ με όλα τα αρχεία υγείας, εξετάσεις κλπ, ώστε σε μια ανάγκη να γνωρίζουν αυτόματα οι θεράποντες ιατροί πως να αντιμετωποιίσουν ένα επείγον περιστατικό.

Πράγματι ήδη μπορεί κάποιος εθελοντικά να πάει στον γιατρό του και να αποκτήσει ένα τέτοιο εμφύτευμα. Στην Ολλανδία ήδη το εκμεταλλέυονται εμπορικά. Σε άρθρο του 2004 (!) ο Andrew Losowsky αναφέρει στον Guardian το μαγαζί Baja Beach Club στο Ρότερνταμ Ολλανδίας παρείχε την υπηρεσία σύνδεσης εμφυτευμένων τσιπ με τραπεζικούς λογαριασμούς ώστε αυτή η "ελίτ" πελατών να μπορούν να απολαμβάνουν τις υπηρεσίες του χωρίς να πρέπει να κρατάνε μαζί τους χρήματα, κάρτες ή ταυτότητες (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2004/jun/10/onlinesupplement1). Από το 2004...

Πέραν όμως της διασκέδασης και της πρακτικότητας στις συναλλαγές, το verichip προωθείται όπως είπαμε για ιατρικούς λόγους. Και αν δεν επιλέγετε αυτή την ευκολία θα έρθει μια πανδημία να σας πείσει!

To 2009 η Verichip κέρδισε την πατέντα για την δημιουργία τσιπ που θα εντοπίζουν τον ιό Η1Ν1! (βλ. Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/article/2009/09/21/us-verichip-shares-idUSTRE58K4BZ20090921). Άσχετο αλλά σχετικό: μόλις το ανακοίνωσε η Verichip η αξία της μετοχής της ανέβηκε 186%!

Οπότε έχουμε δύο δρόμους να οδηγηθούμε στο εμφύτευμα: 1. Την ταυτοποίηση και 2. Την διασφάλιση της δικής μας υγείας αλλά και των άλλων...

Πόσο εύκολα λοιπόν θα μας εκβιάσουν για το καλό της κοινωνίας; Ή μήπως θα μας υποχρεώσουν;

Αλλά το Verichip δεν είναι η τελευταία λέξη της τεχνολογίας. Υπάρχει ένα άλλο τσιπ τύπου "πούδρας" που έχει ΗΔΗ κατασκευαστεί από την Hitachi.

Όπως παρουσιάστηκε αναλυτικά στο άρθρο του Tim Hornyak στο τεύχος του Φεβρουαρίου 2008 του επιστημονικού περιοδικού Scientific American (http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~robins/RFID_Powder.pdf) περιγράφει πως κατασκευάστηκε και λειτουργεί το μ-chip & το powder chip...

Το τσιπ πούδρα λοιπόν έχει διαστάσεις 0,05 χιλιοστά Χ 0,05 χιλιοστά Χ 0,005 χιλιοστά. Με λίγα λόγια είναι αόρατο στο γυμνό μάτι και χαρακτηρίζεται και "χάραγμα" από αρκετούς επιστήμονες.

Υπ' όψην, στο από πάνω σχήμα τα τσιπάκια αναπαριστώνται σε μεγέθυνση Χ10 φορές.

Too many mind.. Viols, Tunings, Books, Traveling & Science (every now & then)...

Right!

So many things took place over the last weeks (or rather months) that I constantly wanted to write about but honestly found no time to. I'll try to describe a few while doing some chores on another window/screen (what? you didn't know I have two monitors connected to my PC?).

Μουσική... or Music:

Alot have taken place concerning music in my life. I finally went after my intentions of studying music properly (with a teacher & everything) that I had decided upon in the summer... with a twist. Instead of studying guitar (classical or otherwise) I chose to go after what I originally (& should say always) wanted to learn as early as 1992-3, the Viola da Gamba!

But where can someone learn this instrument? It is difficult to locate a teacher, I'll admit, especially in Athens (although there is a good one). Intrinsically, it suits my lifestyle better to take up lessons in the UK rather than Greece, so I started collaborating with Wendy Hancock near Nottingham. The first experience with the viol is amazing - it's so different from a guitar. The left hand seems common in both instruments so the transition was more easy, but the right hand (the bow) is extremely difficult & awkward to me. On the same time it is marvelously intriguing & it's difference is so, I don't know how to put it. Plucking notes with the right hand on guitar-like instruments seems fragmented contrary to arched instruments in general (& the Viol in particular) where you have a more fluent sound. Or at least that's the feeling I got. Plus I approach bowing as something closely related to breathing which is just breathtaking.

The whole lesson experience was quite nice - it has been maybe a decade since my last classical guitar lesson - and Wendy is a fantastic teacher. I can't wait to get back to Nittngham in a ocuple of months to continue. Yes in a couple of months as that's the only possible way for me to study - condensed lessons every couple of months. Now I am studying over here all the things Wendy tought me plus the next series of easy pieces.

The bass clef (fa) is a bit difficult to get used to as I still think in terms of the Sol clef. But I am happy to study towards that & I so much enjoy playing even the simplest tunes.I guess it's the sound of the Bass Viol that intrigues me the most.

Indirectly (or directly) connected to that is the tamperament issue...

I was always fasinated by different than standar tunings heard in baroque and preclassical recordings, & I did have a vague perception of what it is all about, but recently I started looking into it more systematically. I think this played a role in choosing the Viol over the guitar, as the Viol has movable frets & has an "old" repertoire - ideal for using an older tuning (e.g. we are using Vallotti tuning with La or A at 415Hz). So I went looking for some literature on tunings & tamperaments, & I stamlbed upon the following blog:

I bought the book "How equal tamperament ruined harmony: and why you should care" from Ross Duffin & I got some interesting review from mr. Adam (look here) and a reference to the review from a journal (look here). To sum it up, that book has a more historical/ simplistic approach to the subject & probably contains some errors. Still it is a good read, especially for travelling (I read it during flights between Athens, Franfurt, Amsterdam, Munich and Manchester).

The next step towards understanding the Temperament issue is Mark Lindley's book "Lutes, Viols & Temperaments", which I also begun reading on airplanes (this time including Thessaloniki as a destination), although I have to say it's less easy than the previous one and is not the ideal companion for flights.

Just a quick note, to deal with tuning I use my iPhone (yes, it's true) and specifically the Cleartune application. It is cheaper than a chromatic tuner & I test it against one only to find it as accurate as expected (& it does include the Vallotti tuning) .

One cool feature is that you can switch from A B C notation to what I am accustomed to, i.e. La Si Do etc. Unfortunately not all music related iPhone apps have that feature.

So that's pretty much it about music, trying to study it that is in between flights as the last two months have been full of flights. I went to Manchester, Amsterdam, Thessaloniki, always connecting through Germany, for business & study related issues (like handing in my MSc dissertation & planning my future PhD). I always used Lufthansa or a Star Alliance affiliated company taking advantage of miles. The good thing is I will be eligible for the Lufthansa 2010 Silver Promotion that gives you frequent flyer status after you make 30 flight segments within this year, which I just completed the day before yesterday returning from Amsterdam. Hurray for me but it was a difficult flight as our plane was stuck on a runway in Paris & it took something close to 5 hours to get back to Munich... so we were marooned over there... everything in the Airport was already closed by the time the plane arrived. You can imagine how the crew was when the plane arrived, after being stuck with passengers inside the airplane on the tarmak for 5 hours! Oh anyway, I am safely back right now & that's all that matters. I am getting tired of travelling but the frequent flyer thing will definetly help.

So yes, I finished the MSc & you would imagine that I have more time on my hands, but it is quite the opposite actually. Apart from paving the way towards the PhD, there are several research projects that have been waiting for the MSc to finsih to start, & I am trying to organise an international workshop in the UK which is a nightmare on its own.

I also started reading a book concerning biometrics and the new world order. In Greece there's alot of discussions going on due to the fact that from 2011 an new digital ID will be distributed (initially on a voluntary basis) and there are discussions on RFID & the such. This book approaches this issue from a religious point of view with a very informed & pragmatistic view - as far as I've read I really like it. You can find some links here & here. Now I really need to get back to work - will try to find time to write more later on (hopefully within this calendar year!).

Coutoo by Andreas, the Serpent Crown & a general note on comics...

I recently decided to move the complete of my comic collection from my parents' house. I originally made a selection when I got married & tooke the best ones & the graphic novels etc to have in the big "σκαλιέρα" of the living room... but now I guess it's the time to (buy a new set of shelves for the bedroom &) take care of all those issues.

During that transport I bumped into several titles & I started reading again, but the first one I read was in my house all along, it was "COUTOO" by Andreas. Streight after that was the "AVENGERS: SERPENT CROWN" TPB by marvel.

I can't help but write about the big differences of these so different types of comics.

Although German in origin I perceive Andreas as a "french school" artist, mainly because when I got aquainted with his work (back in the early ninties) it was through the french big comic houses (Lombard, Dargaud etc), digging up on the first flour of Librairie Kaufmann in Athens. All those "french" comics are so well treated by the publishers, large sizes, hard covers, excellent quality of print... the downside is that they are in french! Thank good for my french-speaking school for that, I was able to read them.

On the other hand the old marvel comics are so familiar as I literally grew up in the eighties reading them & collecting them from a few (counted on the fingers of one hand) kiosks scattered allover Athens & Glyfada who brought "imported comics"... I think that's why I bought the Serpent Crown, I actually had (from Monastiraki) one of the original 70s issues & wanted to read the whole story. That's pretty much my situation nowadays. In my 32 years of age I every now & then find something original to read (which usually is something like Rutu Modan's "Exit Wounds") or dig up some new TPB that collect all the issues I was missing from a certain arc.

So I ended up reading those two comics within a week's time. I so much enjoyed the Andreas' one! The feeling was so nice, so "noir" I couldn't stop reading (& happily french language was not a serious obstacle). The serpent crown on the other hand was... well... boring is not exactly the word for it but...

This difference in the storyline, in the quality of the drawings, in the language etc made me wonder how on earth did these comics (the french school) never made it big time!

After reading Coutoo I went to mycomicshop to see which albums of Andreas were printed in english. I was shocked! I mean almost nothing made it to english print!!! On the other hand if you check amazon.fr you will be dazzled with the many different titles available. I don't understand this.

Coutoo is a detective story in a typical noir atmosphere where the main hero hunts down a serial killer, coutoo (which if freely translated from french means knife), who was also hunted down & killed (?) by his father (also a detective). Very nice plot & classic pictures drawn here & there. Works like that in my mind transform the whole comic media from child/adolescent oriented to adult oriented.

The seprent crown on the other hand deals with the ever complicated adventures of the Avengers streight after the Scarlet Which's & Vision's marriage, involving time travel to the wild west, voyage to a parallel dimension & stuff like that, ending up to the infamous "serpent crown"... The storyline has several weak points (even for a marvel comic book).

My interest to the Serpent Crown started back in (1990 or was it 1991?) during the Atlantis Attacks arc among the Marvel Annuals. That's why I hunted down comicbooks involving that serpent crown... oh, well I was let down that's for sure. But this brings me to another issue alltogether. I see how Marvel collects & prints TPB with "omnibus" pritned on or how they collect storylines like "Inferno" or "Acts of Vengence" & I am puzzled... should I get the TPB or should I buy the original comics from interent sellers??? I honestly do not know what I would enjoy the most. On one hand a TPB looks far better on a shelf & is easy to carry everything bound together on one book. On the other hand with the original comics you get all the non comic content which can strike a note of nostalgia if you were reading stuff like that when young. Also the paper on printed comics was not glossy. Now, is that a good thing? I do not know! Reading the serpent crown on glossy paper made me feel strange. I think it was made & coloured for that cheap non-glossy paper & when printed in gloss it looked somehow "cheap"? I don't know. I am sceptical about that.

So anyways, Coutoo was placed back in the "σκαλιέρα" in the living room and Serpent Crown is waiting to be placed with the rest of the comics & issues on the new IKEA shelves I have my eye on...

Now next to my bed is found Andreas' "RORK Tome I Fragments"... I think Rork is his masterpiece... which means I need to save money to start buying th "Capricorne" series...

By the way, I hade some meetings in athens last week & I managed to get earlier than expected with the Metro, so I stopped by Public to have a lok at their comic book section. I was impressed alright, too many titles to choose from (although no Andreas!). But one thing really annoyed me!

As soon as I bought my iPhone I loaded the free app "Price Check". This is one of those apps which scan the barcode of products & then can look online on stores for a price check or create a library or wishlist. Now, I am not the guy who will check the price of a book on amazon before I buy it from a bookstore, but I was looking forward into scanning things I intend to buy in the future so that I can look them up back home.. unfortunately Public has replaces all the barcodes with its own ones!!! So scanning was not possible. I was so let down as I actually bumped into a graphic novel that looked quite interesting.

It was a Sherlock Holmes graphic Novel, the "A STUDY SCARLET"... hmmm, I flipped the pages & it looked interesting, it did remind me a bit the "LOGICOMIX" one, but maybe that's just me.

Oh anyway.

D.I.Y. Tin & Paper iPhone Cradle

I like my iPhone 3GS & I love having the FlipTime app on when I work - helps me keep track of time. But I need to be able to see it so a cradle for the iPhone is needed.

There are several that are available here & there so one can obviously buy one, but I have no money for that right now so -while trying to avoid work- I decided to make one.

My first (easiest) choice was paper, so I took a paper box (from a glass paperweight bought from the Tokyo National Museum some 6 years ago) & I stapled the bottom inside the top with 4 staples (for stability) creating a 90 degree corner as shown in the pictures.

To hide the staples I put some Hazard tape on it & voila! The cradle is ready! It will hold the iphone & will display the whole screen.

The next move was to create a tin one (for the other desk) using a fisherman's friend tin box (although you can use any kind of box).

Initially I thought of making 4 small holes & using wire to keep the lid open at a 90 degree angle but it seemed a bit messy to do that. So instead I used some velcro I had.

I used 2 pieces of velcro sticker on the inside of the box and then I use a strip of double sided velcro to stick on those pieces & hold the thing together.

As you can see it also works perfectly fine holding the iPhone to it's place.

Nothing fancy but it came in handy & saved me some money. I think these cradles are compatible with iPhone 4 as well :P

Couldn't help myself & bought the new Canon G11 camera last month. It is so simple & amazing I can't stop playing with it (although I bought it for work...).

The main thing that intriges me is the SLR feel... for those of us who grew on SLR cameras it's so weird to have a digital one that has the controls & everything just like it's supossed to!

So I decided to upload every now & then photos taken with the G11 just to show its capabilities.

Haven't mastered it yet though. I am still playing it & slowly figuring out stuff.

Hipstamatic - Lense & film comparison!

The Hipstamatic app for the iPhone... what can I say? Probably the best app I have on my iPhone (& certainly a main reason to get hte darn thing in the first place!).

Those vintage lookin' pics are so realistic, so... analogue... you can't stop taking pictures.

And the possibilities are also many, with all the accessories you can buy from the app, different films & lenses (not to mention the "flash" option). So in a matter of days if not hours I bought all the additional stuff... My problem afterwards was that I had TOO MANY options to deal with!

I mean I wanted to take a picture but I couldn't figure out which feature combination to use! And the Hisptamatic App website isn't really descriptive of its products.

If you take a look at http://hipstamaticapp.com/equipment.html you find descriptions like e.g. for the Helga Viking lense: "Helga was a big woman, but the fat lady won’t sing until she gets her picture taken with this mammoth lense"... any idea what that means? me neither.

SO, I decided to take a picture with all available combinations of lenses & films (sorry people, no flash! I have a life every now & then) so that everyone (including myself) can figure out what the differences between all the options we have with this app.

Slash was actually born in Hampstead & raised in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire ("Interview with Slash", Live from Studio Five (BBC Channel 5), 28 May 2010) while Lemmy was born in there & studied in Staffordshire University (well, Staffordshire Polytechnic back in the day) spending years of his life in gloomy ol' Stoke.

Don't look now, but things may be getting real on the pay-with-your-cell-phone front, as Cupertino's hired a man with years of experience in enabling just that to finally get 'er done. According to his LinkedIn profile, Benjamin Vigier is Apple's new Product Manager of Mobile Commerce, immediately following his handiwork on PayPal Mobile, Sprint MyMoneyManager and the iPhone-based Starbucks Card. Before that, he spent two years heading SanDisk's mobile commerce and near-field communication efforts and over a year doing NFC for Bouygues Telecom, so it's not much of a stretch to imagine the futuristic concert tickets depicted in Apple's recent patent applications might become reality before long. Either that, or he'll wind up on a completely unrelated project, only to leave under mysterious circumstances later on.

Γιορτή της Παναγιάς του Δεκαπενταυγούστου: από τις λίγες πια αφορμές που απόμειναν για να διαπομπεύουμε οι Νεοέλληνες επιδεικτικά τον μεταφυσικό άξονα τού κάποτε πολιτισμού μας. Θρησκευτικές παράτες πανηγυριώτικου εντυπωσιασμού, πομπώδεις κενολογίες πολιτικών, δημοσιογράφων και δεσποτάδων – αχταρμάς επιδείξεων ασχετοσύνης και απαιδευσίας. Ολα να βεβαιώνουν την άγνοια ή την κυρίαρχη αδιαφορία για την πάλη «νοήματος» που μεταμορφώνει την αγέλη σε κοινωνία («οίον γιγαντομαχία τις περί της ουσίας»).

Η οικονομική χρεοκοπία και ο έσχατος διεθνής εξευτελισμός μας, η διαφθορά και κατάρρευση του πολιτικού μας συστήματος, η αλλοτρίωση του κοινωνικού σώματος σε αρένα διεκδικήσεων κτηνώδους ιδιοτέλειας, αυτά και τα συναφή εκεί έχουν την αιτία τους: στη συμπλεγματική ταύτιση του μηδενισμού με την «πρόοδο», στην επηρμένη χλεύη για κάθε ιερό και όσιο. Κυρίως, στη διαστροφή των θησαυρισμάτων και θεσμών της μεταφυσικής παράδοσης: στη θρησκειοποίηση του εκκλησιαστικού γεγονότος.

Θολές οι αιτίες, τόσο από τη χρονική απόσταση των απαρχών όσο και από τη σύγχυση των φρενών. Για τέσσερις ολόκληρους αιώνες, η υποδούλωση στους Τούρκους εξαφάνισε την ενεργό παρουσία του Ελληνισμού από το ιστορικό προσκήνιο. Και αυτό που προέκυψε σαν Ελληνισμός μετά από τόσο μακρό διάστημα, ήταν ένα μεταπρατικό κρατίδιο που πάλευε (και παλεύει) και πιθηκίζει τρόπο βίου (πολιτισμό) με αναποδογυρισμένους τους όρους της ελληνικής πρότασης και ταυτότητας.

Στη διάρκεια των αιώνων της ελληνικής απουσίας, ένας άκριτος και ανεξέλεγκτος από τα κριτήρια των Ελλήνων πολιτισμός γεννήθηκε στη μεταρωμαϊκή (βαρβαρική τότε) Δύση. Εκπληκτικός σε δυναμισμό πολιτισμός με κέντρο το άτομο, την εξυπηρέτηση και κολακεία των ενορμήσεων αυτοσυντήρησης, κυριαρχίας, ηδονής: Αντί για την ελληνική ταύτιση του «αληθεύειν» με το «κοινωνείν», η ταύτιση της αλήθειας με τη «σύμπτωση» (adaequatio) ατομικού νου και αντι-κείμενου νοουμένου – σαρωτική επιβολή της νοησιαρχίας, του ατομοκεντρισμού. Αντί της «κοινωνίας» η societas («εταιρισμός επί κοινώ συμφέροντι»). Αντί του «δικαίου» (του «ανά τον λόγον») το jus: κώδικας χρησιμοθηρικών κανονιστικών αρχών. Αντί της δημοκρατίας, η res publica. Αντί για την ελευθερία (άθλημα αυθυπέρβασης) η συμβατική (με σύμβαση) θωράκιση ατομικών δικαιωμάτων. Αντί για το εκκλησιαστικό γεγονός (την αγαπητική κοινωνία της ύπαρξης και της γνώσης), η θρησκεία (ατομική αξιομισθία, ατομική σωτηρία). Και πάει λέγοντας.

Ετσι, βγαίνοντας από την υποδούλωση στους Τούρκους ο Ελληνισμός (αλλά και οι υπόλοιπες κοινωνίες της Ορθόδοξης ελληνορωμαϊκής και σλαβικής «οικουμένης») στον 19ο αιώνα, βρέθηκαν σε ριζικά καινούργιο ιστορικό περιβάλλον, στους αντίποδες του πολιτισμού που είχε διαμορφώσει η συνάντηση της ελληνικής «πόλεως» με τη χριστιανική «εκκλησία». Ο πριν από την Τουρκοκρατία πολιτισμός ήταν πια ένα απόμακρο παρελθόν, κατασυκοφαντημένο λυσσωδώς από τη Δύση, μετονομασμένο χλευαστικά σε «Βυζάντιο»! Το ρεαλιστικό τώρα δίλημμα για τους Ορθόδοξους ήταν: ή το μοντέλο της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας, δηλαδή η καθήλωση στην ιστορική καθυστέρηση και υπανάπτυξη, ή η μίμηση του καινούργιου, «πεφωτισμένου και λελαμπρυσμένου» κόσμου της Δύσης.

Η ίδια η απελευθέρωση των Ορθοδόξων από τον τουρκικό ζυγό δεν κατορθώθηκε με άξονα και στόχο να αποκατασταθεί η άλλοτε ενιαία σε πολιτισμό ελληνορωμαϊκή «οικουμένη», ιστορική σάρκα, πολυεθνική - πολυφυλετική, της Μιας Καθολικής Εκκλησίας, από την οποία είχε αποσχιστεί η Δύση. Η απελευθέρωση κατορθώθηκε στο όνομα και με το όραμα του καινούργιου μοντέλου συλλογικότητας που είχαν γεννήσει στη Δύση ο ατομοκεντρισμός και η απολυτοποιημένη χρησιμοθηρία: το μοντέλο του «έθνους - κράτους». Οι ορθόδοξοι λαοί απελευθερώθηκαν χάρη στην έγκαιρη παγίδευσή τους στο αντιμεταφυσικό μένος της Δύσης (απόλυτα δικαιωμένο εκεί ιστορικά) και στα παράγωγά του (φυσιοκρατία, δικαιώματα του φυσικού ατόμου) σαρκωμένα στο συναρπαστικό υπόδειγμα της Γαλλικής και της Αμερικανικής Επανάστασης.

Διέσωζαν οι Ορθόδοξοι την επίγνωση διαφοράς ή και αντίθεσης προς τη θρησκειοποιημένη Χριστιανοσύνη της Δύσης. Αλλά κατανοούσαν και εξέφραζαν τη διαφορά ή αντίθεση με τους όρους που είχε πια καθολικά επιβάλει η Δύση: Ορους ιδεολογικής αντιμαχίας, δογματικών - νοησιαρχικών διατυπώσεων άσχετων με την πραγματικότητα της ζωής και το «νόημά» της. Τώρα και για τους Ορθοδόξους «πίστη» σήμαινε ατομικές «πεποιθήσεις» βασισμένες σε αξιωματικές a priori παραδοχές, με μοναδικό τάχα βιωματικό στοιχείο την επιδίωξη ατομικής αξιόμισθης ηθικότητας, ατομικής (στεγανά εγωκεντρικής) σωτηρίας.

Στην Ελλάδα σήμερα μοιάζει μάλλον αδύνατο να εντοπίσει κανείς συνοδικό κείμενο, επισκοπικό κήρυγμα, οποιαδήποτε έκφραση επίσημου εκκλησιαστικού λόγου, που να εκφράζει επίγνωση της διαφοράς της Εκκλησίας από τη θρησκεία, διαφοράς του μετέχειν - κοινωνείν από τον ατομοκεντρισμό τού να θρησκεύει κανείς για την αξιομισθία. Η γενίκευση μοιάζει αφοριστική, αλλά οι δυνατότητες για να ελεγχθεί προσφέρονται πληθωρικά: Οι τηλεοπτικές αναμεταδόσεις πανηγυριώτικου ιδεολογικού και ηθικοπλαστικού ευτελισμού της σημερινής Γιορτής θα κατακλύσουν τα Δελτία Ειδήσεων. Κάθε Κυριακή ο Ελληνας τηλεθεατής των κρατικών καναλιών μπορεί να κρίνει αν το αφόρητης κενολογίας κήρυγμα του καθεδρικού ναού των Αθηνών (ή της Θεσσαλονίκης) διαφέρει, έστω και ελάχιστα, από κάθε αντίστοιχη ρωμαιοκαθολική ή προτεσταντική ευσεβολογία. Και η υπεράσπιση της «Ορθοδοξίας», πανομοιότυπη με την ξύλινη ιδεολογική αντιμαχία «ορθόδοξων» μαρξιστών με «σχισματικούς» τροτσκιστές, ρεφορμιστές ή όποιους άλλους συμπλεγματικούς της μονοτροπίας.

Η ιδεολογική αλλοτρίωση και θρησκειοποίηση του εκκλησιαστικού γεγονότος κατακερμάτισε την άλλοτε Μία Καθολική και Αποστολική Εκκλησία (που πραγμάτωση και φανέρωσή της ήταν η κάθε τοπική σύναξη Ευχαριστίας) σε πλήθος εθνοφυλετικών κρατικών εκκλησιών, κατά κανόνα υποταγμένων στις σκοπιμότητες του κρατικού εθνικισμού. Πριν από τη θρησκειοποίηση, την ενεργό και λειτουργική ενότητα των διάσπαρτων στην οικουμένη εκκλησιών την εξασφάλιζε το «συνοδικό σύστημα» με ραχοκοκαλιά τον θεσμό της «πενταρχίας των πατριαρχών». Ο θεσμός ακυρώθηκε, όταν οι Ρώσοι, το 1589, απαίτησαν εκβιαστικά τον «ανύψωσή» τους σε πατριαρχείο εκλαμβάνοντας τον τίτλο σαν προνόμιο εξουσιαστικής ισχύος, προϋπόθεση αυτοκρατορικής αυτοτέλειας. Τους ακολούθησαν στην αδαή εθνικιστική θρασύτητα οι Σέρβοι, το 1920, οι Ρουμάνοι, το 1925, οι Βούλγαροι, το 1953. Σκανδαλωδέστεροι οι Νεοέλληνες, είχαμε αυτοανακηρυχθεί, το 1833, «αυτοκέφαλοι», με την εκκλησία μας «επικρατούσα θρησκεία»!

Η πανηγυριώτικη ασχετοσύνη στη γιορτή της Παναγιάς του Δεκαπενταυγούστου έχει ρίζες τόσο βαθιές στο παρελθόν μας όσο και η ανίατη παραπληγία του πολιτικού μας συστήματος.
